Every year visitors toss over 1.5 million euros over their shoulders into the famous Trevi Fountain, which is legally collected by the city and channeled directly to Caritas Roma, the premier Catholic charity in Rome handling large-scale welfare projects, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters.
