Up Helly Aa - Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland
Lerwick Up Helly Aa is a superb spectacle, a celebration of Shetland history, and a triumphant demonstration of islanders' skills and spirit. This northern Mardi Gras, run entirely by volunteers, lasts just one day (and all the following night). But it takes several thousand people 364 days to organise. Much of the preparation is in strictest secrecy. The biggest secret of all is what the head of the festival, the 'Guizer Jarl' (representing the Viking chief), will wear and which character from the Norse Sagas they'll represent.

Milano Cortina Winter Olympics 2026

They will mark the third Winter Olympics, and fourth overall, to be hosted by Italy; Cortina d'Ampezzo had previously hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics.
The Games will feature the debut of ski mountaineering as a Winter Olympic event, and will be the first Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Kirsty Coventry.
Philip Glass’s opera Satyagraha at the Palais Garnier - Paris, France
What is Mahatma Gandhi’s influence on the contemporary political world? This is the question explored by Philip Glass’s opera Satyagraha (1980), the second in his trilogy devoted to historical figures, alongside Einstein on the Beach (1976) and Akhnaten (1984).
This work, with its mesmerizing music, interweaves timelines, relating each of its three acts to a key figure linked to Gandhi in order to better understand the genesis of his political thought: Leo Tolstoy, with whom he corresponded; the poet Rabindranath Tagore, who supported him; and Martin Luther King, who was inspired by his principles of non-violence. This is the first time the Paris Opera has presented this brilliant work.

The Total Solar Eclipse of 2026 – The Open Sea, Multiple Locations
We are already counting down the days until the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to travel to prime viewing locations across Greenland, Iceland, and Spain for the highly anticipated celestial event. But unlike last year's solar eclipse that moved across North America, much of this eclipse's path of totality stretches over the open sea—meaning there's no better place to experience the phenomenon than from the deck of a ship.
Cruise lines are seizing the opportunity, designing itineraries that put travelers directly beneath the moon’s shadow alongside eclipse cartographers, astronauts, and other special guest lecturers. Another major benefit to booking a floating hotel: ships can reposition in case of cloudy skies, so there's no need to worry about fickle weather obscuring your view.
